First Patients Treated with New Barricade™ Complex Finishing Coil

21 May 2014

Blockade Medical L.L.C., a privately held company focused on the development of catheter based therapeutic devices for the treatment of cerebral aneurysms and related diseases of the neurovascular system, announced today the first series of patients treated with the new Barricade Complex Finishing Coils and enhanced detachment. The Barricade Complex Finishing Coil has received 510(k) Clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European CE Mark.

“The new Barricade Complex Finishing Coil is a clinically important addition to the existing Barricade Coil line.   In my clinical experience, the Barricade Complex Finishing Coil was extremely soft and effective in seeking space in the aneurysm and will be a very useful coil in the treatment of a wide range of aneurysms,” said Sean Cullen, M.D., Chief, Neurointerventional Services, Kaiser Redwood City, Redwood City, California.

Blockade Medical’s President and Chief Technology Officer Dave Ferrera stated, “The Complex Finishing Coil represents a significant addition to the Barricade Coil System. In addition, the new enhanced detachment provides physicians utilizing the Barricade Coil System a higher level of performance. Blockade Medical will continue to focus on rapid innovation based upon physician feedback.”

“I was impressed with the Barricade Complex Finishing Coil. Traditionally, I have used helical finishing coils in my coiling cases. In comparison, the Barricade Complex Finishing Coils seemed to do a better job of seeking out the open space in the aneurysm. I attribute this to their soft feel and the complex shape that the coil took,” commented Ronald Benitez, M.D., President and Director of Endovascular Surgery, Atlantic Neurosurgical Specialists, Morristown, New Jersey.
